A little more progress on tattoo last night. I have a theme now. A theme is good. It gives me a bit more direction. It’s a theme I’ve used before, but that’s the nice thing about themes; I could write twenty stories with the same theme and most people probably wouldn’t even catch it.

Writing is difficult right now. I think it’s that I’m out of writing shape. Last night it just seemed to drain me. I fought through though and worked through a few scenes. I have enough now that I’m confident this weekend will afford me the opportunity to completely finish up a workable draft. A workable draft is a good place to be at this point. I’ll be glad when I’m back to ‘Story A Week’ shape.

I’ve got a little inventory of stories that I think are workable. One of them is a piece from Clarion; the other is one I wrote before Clarion. I’ve also got a screenplay (an extremely short 20 page screenplay) that I would like to do something with. I’d like to add that to my writing list. I’d like to write at least two or three screenplays a year. The last one was fantasy, but I have in mind to finish up a little romantic comedy thriller I started working on.

There’s something funny about writing as a profession. You seem to meet with a lot of critical success if you can focus on one thing, like writing literary fantasy novels for example. However, you seem to meet with more financial success if you can diversify and write a lot of different stuff. I’m not certain which of these I want to be. I like a lot of different stuff. I’d like to one day write a crime thriller like Heat or maybe a big sprawling epic western. There’s only so much time though.
