Tomb Wife by Gwyneth Jones

I just listened to Nebula Nominee Gwyneth Jones short story ‘Tomb Wife’ from StarShipSofa read beautifully by Mark Douglas Nelson. First, I want to comment on what an excellent reading this was. I’ve always been reasonably impressed with the production quality on StarShipSofa, but this really stood out to me as a professional sounding work. It’s the kind of quality I’m used to paying money for. So excellent job.

The story is of course, quite excellent. I want to give it another listen, because I got so wrapped up in the thing that I lost track of the mechanics. Few stories actually lure me enough into their world and do enough hand waving that I don’t see their mechanics—or at least, choose not to. I’m glad I let the writer check out for a little while on this one, because the ending resonated better that way, but I’m anxious to find what I can learn from this piece by looking under the hood.
